A sudden onset of crushing chest pain, accompanied by shortness of breath and shooting pains into the arm and jaw. A severe headache, which worsens and leads to numbness in one side of the body, slurred speech, and the inability to move the limbs. A bee-string that swells up the face and tongue, causes severe wheezing and gasping for air, along with a sudden, dramatic drop in blood pressure.
These are just three examples of the serious medical emergencies that occur in the average suburban neighborhood on a daily basis. The best way to combat crises such as these is to deliver highly-trained, well-equipped responders to the scene of the emergency as rapidly as possible. Our EMS strategy is designed to achieve precisely that result.
Every single Firefighter, whether paid or volunteer, is certified as an EMT-Basic – capable of operating a defibrillator, resuscitating a stopped heart, ventilating a patient who has stopped breathing, and carrying out a wide range of other life-saving interventions. Boulder Rural paramedics arrive on the same fire engine as the EMT-Basics, and can administer critical medications, place advanced airways such as endotracheal tubes, and employ specialized techniques such as cardioversion. The paramedic level of care is widely accepted as being the highest standard of prehospital medical care available, and Boulder Rural is committed to delivering a paramedic to each and every medical emergency that befalls our customers.
Working in conjunction with our neighbors at the Mountain View Fire Department, Boulder Rural has instituted a Joint Response Area (JRA) in order to bring more resources to each call. Paramedics and EMTs from both departments train together and work together on a regular basis, resulting in a consistently superior standard of teamwork and medical care delivered to our patients.
