Fire

At Boulder Rural Fire Department, we pride ourselves on providing the latest technology and training in the fire suppression arena to our customers. We always strive for the highest National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) standards. The goals are the highest levels of safety and efficiency for life saving and property conservation efforts. In order to accomplish these goals and stay above the bar, Boulder Rural Fire Department focuses on the following criteria.

Training

Boulder Rural Fire Department responders train in all aspects of the many skills we provide on a never-ending basis. Our Training Captain, Robert O'Donnell, is charged with the responsibility of keeping the staff at BRFD current with all certifications (didactic and practical) as well as providing drill ground operations for the testing of skills in the various fields. From a 'Live Fire' training at one of the regional training centers to an ice rescue scenario in the winter, the focus is the same; to be current and proficient in all the techniques that any skill demands.
We also cross train with neighboring departments. This is crucial for an emergency scene to be efficient and effective. BRFD is also proud to have the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) training resource of Twink Dalton, of Mountain View Fire Department. Twink is a nationally recognized EMS educator and has authored several books on EMS.
When it really counts, you as a customer can rest assured that you will be provided with the highest level of trained responders possible.

Equipment

You have heard it before; "the right tool for the right job". BRFD prides itself in being a very progressive fire department. The introduction of Boulder County's first and only Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) engine, the latest thermal imaging cameras, and hazardous gas detection monitors are just some of the examples of our commitment to applying cutting edge technology to our jobs and your safety. Stay tuned for our 2009 primary engine replacement. With depth of experience and detailed knowledge of apparatus, the combination of our Fire Marshal, Jeff Webb (Ph.D. of Physics) and our Operations shift Captain Mike MacNamara, and shift coordinator, Greg Spencer, you can be certain there will be a highly advanced engine arriving on scene!

Response

The outcome of any fire departments efforts of fire suppression or rescue depends upon two key factors: response time and number of responders. BRFD adheres to the standards of the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), NFPA 1710 and NFPA 1720. What does this mean to you? It means you will always get a minimum of 3 responders on the fire engine and 2 responders on the ALS ambulance. Every responder has a minimum qualification of Firefighter I, EMT Basic, Haz-Mat Operations, and Wildland certification. Above that, two responders will be Paramedics, and one, a Captain, with years of experience and training to run any emergency scene. Response times to an incident are expedited by the fact that we have both an engine and an ALS ambulance responding from different locations to the scene. We will be there when you need us!
